Ground hazards & possible risk controls include:
• Sloping ground – Never ignore tilt alarms & always know your machines capacities and limitation.
• Underground services – check for signage or site plans, use locators or pot holing, contact Dial before you dig (1100 or 1100.com.au)
• Soft or unsupported– talk to a qualified engineer to get an engineer’s report. Relocate to better ground, use more packing (steel plates, timber, or plastic pads to spread the weight over a larger area.
• Uneven– drive equipment with booms lowered and retracted and at slow speeds
• Trenches – use the 1m away for every 1m deep rule. Further if required • Slippery – clean up spills, use alternate routes
• Obstacles – remove or find alternate routes

For safe use: • Must be properly designed & approved • Checked before use & secured to forklift • Only be used for short duration otherwise a scissor or boom lift is recommended • Never drive people around in the platform • Forklift operator to remain on forklifts at all times with hand brake on and controls in neutral when raising the platform • Only operate on a flat level surface • Total load not exceed 250 kg • Never use step ladders or other device to gain extra height Training, licensing, & verification of competence are effective ways to meet legal requirements. e a forklift licence? This depends on the State you are in, what attachment you are using and the capacity of the machine. Only if a risk assessments determines there is a risk of falling. So avoid over reaching or leaning out of the baskets. According to AS/NZ1418.10 anchor points for harnesses a not required to be fitted to scissor lifts. Operators are protected from falls by the guard and hand rails.
Other possible hazards with wearing a harness in a scissor lift are giving people a false sense of security and more risk taking behaviour. And if you do fall out, being swung into the side of the machine causing injury.
